The Lincolnshire market town of Stamford became the first conservation area in England in 1967. Today, with fourteen antique establishments, it is an ideal haven for collectors and St Martins Antique Centre is the jewel in its crown.
Writer Walter Scott, standing at the top of St. Martins, described the first view of the town as the finest between London and York. Stamford's architectural gems are also well catalogued by Pevsner. Its pubs, restaurants and hotels provide everything from real ale, or four courses, to four posters. Burghley House is within walking distance of the centre. Close by are numerous enchanting villages.
